Psychiatrist Jobs in District of Columbia

A Psychiatrist is a critical player in the mental health industry. They are medical doctors who specialize in mental health, including substance use disorders. Psychiatrists are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological issues. Their job involves diagnosing and treating mental illnesses through a combination of psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, hospitalization, and medication. They can conduct physical exams, order and interpret lab tests, and prescribe medications to help manage mental health disorders.

To become a Psychiatrist, a medical degree is required, followed by completed residency training in psychiatry. They should also be board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Important skills for psychiatrists include strong analytical skills, excellent communication skills, a deep understanding of the human mind, and patience. Prior to becoming a Psychiatrist, an individual may have a job role as a General Physician, a Psychology Researcher, or a Psychiatric Nurse.
