Job Description Summary:

The Psychologist is part of an interdisciplinary team responsible for providing direct services, including bariatric pre-surgical evaluation with assessment and testing, and group education on lifestyle change, stress management, and other factors related to health and wellness. The Psychologist also provides consultation regarding psychological and behavioral health needs of the patients and their families. Additionally, the Psychologist will lead post-operative bariatric support groups and disordered eating group therapy sessions. The interdisciplinary team consists of surgeons, physicians, nurse practitioners, dietitians, nurses, and exercise physiologists. The Psychologist will play a key role as the behavioral health expert in the comprehensive weight management department.

Responsibilities And Duties:

Identify psychological, emotional, or behavioral issues and diagnose disorders, using information obtained from clinical interviews, psychological tests, health records, and reference materials. Communicate the findings back to the patient and recommend alternative treatment options if needed. Write reports and maintain required paperwork. Obtain and study medical, psychological, social, and family histories from outside providers. Use the information obtained to make determinations on patient's readiness and appropriateness for bariatric surgery.

Lead group education sessions as part of a medical weight loss program. Provide education as part of an interdisciplinary team to patients that are seeking weight loss solutions through lifestyle change. Meet with patients in small group, weekly classes.

Individual brief, short term consultation regarding problems such as stress management, substance abuse, chronic illness, disordered eating, and family situations, to modify behavior or to improve personal, social, and vocational adjustment. Use a variety of treatment methods, such as psychotherapy, behavior modification, stress reduction therapy, behavioral pain management, cognitive behavioral therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy. Discuss the treatment of problems with clients. Develop and implement individual treatment plans, specifying type, frequency, intensity, and duration of treatment. Interact with clients to assist them in gaining insight, defining goals, and planning action to achieve effective personal, social, educational, and vocational and health related development and adjustment.

Provide educational presentations to patients and families, health care professionals, fitness center members, corporate partners and to the community through speaking engagements. Participation in MBSAQIP Safety and Quality quarterly meetings and Hospital psychology section meetings. Encouraged to attend weight management focused national conferences.
